Topping your Eucalyptus Tree in Tucson is not the ideal thing to do yet I see it happen all the time.
For the record the ANSI Pruning standards DOES NOT recommend or recognize topping as an acceptable pruning practice. If removal is the only other option it may be considered but it is not advisable unless there is no other option.
It is needed that you read our other blogs on tree trimming and disease to understand how a tree reacts to cutting, storm damage and topping. The picture given is a direct example of why you do not top a tree. This Eucalyptus has been topped for NO reason. It was not near a structure, not over 50 feet tall and in no way blocking a view. The damage is clearly seen with 40 + shoots coming from the cut, 3 of them dominant on top have grown over 15 feet. The problem is that these "new" shoots that have taken off are not structurally anchored into the parent branch. This means that they are not tapping into the food storage of the larger branches and also not able to support their weight when bigger. (not to mention the fact that micro organisms have spread on the cut surface and the tree is under increased stress)
The lifespan of the tree has been shortened and the aesthetic qualities are no better as it looks horrible. I recommend not Topping your Eucalyptus Tree in Tucson and hiring a Tree Company with Accreditations and training needed to make healthy decisions for your tree's. Sometimes it is needed and I am in favor of it over removal. I hope this blog was informative and helpful in making your decision on topping your Eucalyptus Tree.
